CYPHER art exhibition at Tremenheere Gallery in Cornwall
First artist-led exhibition staged in partnership with Newlyn School of Art. Reading Room reveals insights behind artworks.

Cypher launches 2018 with a truly compelling group exhibition of visual imagery from 13 artists at the Gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, near Penzance, Cornwall. It reveals the vigorous way personal expressions are shaped and find the most appropriate media. Installation, projection, video, sound, drawing, painting, photography and collaborative works within the show all illustrate the most effective ways to communicate their preoccupations. Artworks will be on show throughout the ground floor exhibition space, and in addition, by transforming the upper gallery into a reading room the artists can share the way they research and develop their ideas.
During the show many of the artists will be available to discuss the artworks and the public are welcome to join them and the curators over two weekends of interactive discussions and talks.
“Often visitors to an exhibition are left wondering how an artist came to decide what to create,” said Jesse Leroy Smith, mentor and curator. “Unusually, Cypher includes a Reading Room as a kind of R&D lab, inviting viewers to explore the thinking behind how the art exhibited downstairs evolved from concept and sketch to finished artwork. The Walk & Talk and Symposium weekends extend this further by giving visitors access to the artists and opportunities to learn about how and why the art was made."
The 13 artists have worked together on a one-year professional practice programme at the innovative and dynamic Newlyn School of Art. The school is developing new ways to generate networks and critical discussion, and these artists have helped develop ideas for future platforms that the school can facilitate, including inviting artists from across the UK and beyond to give talks and mentoring, panel discussions and creative collaborations. The success of this year-long course is due to the collective energy between the artists attending and those delivering the course, and this level of research and inquiry is reflected in this show.
Of this exhibition, which marks the first anniversary of the Gallery at Tremenheere, founder Dr Neil Armstrong, says, “We have been exhibiting large scale and outdoor sculpture by internationally renowned artists at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens for some years now and last year we built an art gallery to extend our artistic programme and showcase the creative talent of contemporary artists working in Cornwall. We are excited to welcome Cypher as the first artist-led exhibition to be staged in partnership with Newlyn School of Art,held on the one year anniversary of the opening of the gallery.”
Jesse Leroy Smith adds “all this makes for an honest, vital and engaging show that seeks to unearth the influences, instincts and reasons behind the artists’ specific works”.

The Opening is from 5-8pm, Friday 26 January 2018 and all are welcome.
